However, staff working in NKF makes a living themselves to feed their family etc... some spent their lives working there... it may be a charity org.. but to the staff, it's their career and job there and of cos, also for charity... they need to be rewarded at times of performance as well.. however, since it's the public's donation, they should be more transparent... just to let ppl know where the money goes to and decide for themselves... we still need capable ppl to work in this eorganisation to better manage the funds we donate and get the best out of it...
so if NKF pays super low, how many of us will drop our current job and work there SOLELY for charity purpose?

Your defence and justification of NKF CEO and the board's actions are well-written. It's a cold qualification of the facts and lacks any of the emotive Tour-de-force piece by Rockson.
Durai was hired as a professional manager to run a non-profit organization. As in any well-oiled organization, specific goals would have been put on the CEO's scorecard as measurable objectives. This would be accompanied by specific rewards when these objectives are met.
And what success Durai achieved. Over the last decade he made NKF the leading charitable organization with the richest coffers in Singapore and possibly in the region. From this perspective, he cannot be faulted. He achieved all his goals set for him and then some.
But I digress. As all "humans", I tend to get complacent, including my arguments. Yes, I agree with you that we get used to certain luxuries. Luxuries that I pay out of my OWN hard-earn money. Besides being complacent, the former NKF CEO seems to have forgotten in his bed of luxuries that the gold tap he approved with the nice toilet came from money that was donated to the charity, not to his pocket. Strangest thing is that the board of directors seems to have missed this extravagance as well...
To be honest, I think Durai should be paid what he was paid IF he was running a for-profit organization. I would even go as far as saying that his basic pay of SGD25,000 per month is reasonable for his responsibilities he carries. Even part of his bonus can be justified. But I critise this complete stranger of the former NKF CEO not for his pay or his achievements, but his lack of ethical leadership. In failing to ensure the right information such as the number of patients and the funds needed, he has deliberately breached the trust of the donating public. Yes, he has helped thousands but is he doing it the right way? Or do you subscribe to principle of "Do anything to get your way as long as you don't get caught?" He doesn't need to be a Mother Teresa but we can't afford a Kenneth Lay or a Bernard Ebbers in this small country of Singapore.

We cannot equate money made to money donated....or the UN man (Mr Edger?) who successfully spearheaded the fundraising & rescue operation in the recent Tsunami must be paid at least a billion for the hundreds of billion he has raised! He may not even be paid $600K!

I find it really highly inappropriate why salary packages of the top 3 people in a non-profit charitable organisation is allowed by the government not to be disclosed.... They can publicly solicit for donation, and the public cannot be informed of their salaries, what is this???
If the TT Durai is paid $600K/year, I am sure the senior managers ($400K??), managers ($200K??), assistant managers ($100K??), executives down to the drivers are definitely not lowly paid too (I heard for a fresh grad starting work at NKF is around S$2,800, that's way way higher than the industry standard!!!). For a ~900 staff organisation, the operating cost (let alone the costs in helping the patients) is staggering.
The senior managers and managers are the lucky ones, they have not been badly bashed as what their CEO has suffered, yet receive filthy amount of bonuses every year..... If they really have the hearts to help kidney patients regardless the salary, we will know who are these real people who don't quit once NKF starts to review and lower down the staff salaries.

I have stopped donating many years ago when I found out and realised that at least 90% of every dollar donated, goes to someone else other than the intended place, whether it is an organization, charity or cause. The organisers or the administrators or the people behind it, will take and walk away with the money, and there is no accountability. so I have stopped giving to religious organisations, charities, movements, causes, save the this or that, better this or that, even flag days, christmas cards or stamps. Better I use my hard earned money on myself and I will be happier.
