Well, when u have a national education that streses on making money, this is the sort of scandal you're going to get. It's hard to inculcate a spirit fo public service when even kids are taught in school to make as much money as possible (aka, entrepreneurship).
The term "Public Servant" has become a joe, since most of many of these people are getting paid a tremendous amount of money without ever being questioned. Look at NTUC, it's a trade union, but the way it operates, it resembles a profit-driven orgn with a monopoly. The NKF case is just a tip of the iceberg; my personal opinion, perhaps, but I wouldn't be surprised if part of their reserves went into other investments as well (so, you going to sue for me for this personal opinion too, NKF?)
As for Mrs Goh's comments, I find that msot disappointing (more than their CEO's). Here you have the wife of our SM, a much-respected politician who I remember promoted "rule by consensus"; $600,000 might seem like "peanuts" in the context of the sort of reserves NKF has, but this is public money, and above all, $600,000 to those kidney patients who still have to fork out for their treatment IS a lot of money. Maybe Mrs Goh and co. should stop rationalising as business people, and more like public servants.
If this doesn't shop how out of touch with the masses some of our country's "elites" are, I dont know what will.

Well, to my knowledge. Those dialysis centers are sponsored by individual organisation (e.g. Temple, Church, private sectors etc.)who helped to set up and fund the center. NKF only help to manage it only!
So on NKF part, the funds raised is to pay for their workers wages, fat bonuses, HQ maintenance, 1st class travel, dividends payout, the king's style toilet, 8 cars with drivers.

I think we should come to a conclusion and tha is since they have 30 years of reserved and they are not been honest telling the public with only 3 years, we should stop donating for a while till he resign and Mrs Goh clarify on the issue and they publish the account statement of the funds for the past 3 to 5 years and in future they should plns to publish every quaterly or so on their statements.

They claimed that each patient needs $2600 per month SUBJECT TO APPROVAL. They also claimed that there are 3000 patients compared to 1000 previously. How many of them are subsidised? If (a very big IF) all of them are subsidised, it'll come to $2.6 million.

This incident already shows the NKF Managment has abused and failed to utilize the fund to bring greater welfare and benefits for our people.
In the name of the people, I urge the government to
1)Take over the NKF, make it a state-owned organization. So that the people will feel secure that the money will be properly channelled.
2)Confiscate the fund which origin from the people and put it with the public funds.
It is a plus that the NKF has been successful in their branding and marketing. But is a million minus if the money is not utilized for wat is supposed to be there for.
NKF appears jus like a beautiful apple outside while inside it, worms are slowly eating into it.
What do we need to do? Remove the worms. Replant it into an apple tree, so that those who deserve can enjoy the fruits.

Pardon me, for an ignorant fool like me to ask some questions, hopefully gets an answer or two.
All this donations from ordinary citizens, rich or poor, office executives or the man in the streets, what is the actual percentage of the donation goes to the pennyless poor kidney patients? To what I gathered every kidney failure patient who can't afford the hefty medical bill have to fork out 70% of the treatment. The other 30% is subsidise by NKF subjecting to much qualifying conditions. How far am I from the truth? Can someone enlighten me? I've heard of a case where an old lady who developed acute kidney failure and has no money to pay her 70% bill. NKF allowed her to use their dialysis machine and later have lawyer issued debt collection letters sent to her when they could not deduct from her giro. Anybody can verify that?
The post by Pukebomb caught my attention. The story of a toilet cleaner lady. It really bring tears to my eyes. I guess many cleaner ladies like her are oblivious to the present NKF fiasco and will continue to fork out thier meagre hard earned income to contribute to the NKF top excutives' peanuts.
And who is this Marie Antonette Tan Choo Leng???????? Will just mentioning her name here land me in Changi or Tanah Merah? To what I gathered here, she is somewhat associated with our much beloved SM.

I feel pretty good about the whole incident. That's probably because I have never donated to NKF, and will never intend to. Didn't like the fact that they were making forays into the 'territories' of other charities as well. National Kidney Heart Foundation or something like that right? That's one of the biggest oxymorons I have ever heard, right up there with 'Military Intelligence'. Durai works 14 hour days? That sort of work hours may also mean that the fella is simply inefficient. He may have taken 14 hours to do what others may have done in 8 hours.

Public anger over charity chief’s salary

An unprecedented wave of public anger has swept Singapore after the head of its largest charity disclosed this week that he was paid up to S$600,000 ($350,000, €290,000, £200,000) annually and took first-class flights.
The headquarters of the National Kidney Foundation was covered with protest graffiti, in a rare act of vandalism for the normally placid city-state, and the topic has dominated internet chatrooms.
The issue could prove embarrassing for the government since the chief patron of the NKF is the wife of Goh Chok Tong, Singapore's senior minister and former prime minister.
The public outrage also reflects complaints that Singapore's elite appears to be enjoying a lavish lifestyle when the income gap between the rich and poor is widening.
NKF, which helps to finance dialysis treatment for kidney patients, has been one of Singapore's most popular charities.
But it also has been criticised for a lack of transparency, including refusing to reveal the salary of its chief executive, T. T. Durai.
The controversy surrounding NKF was triggered after Mr Durai filed a defamation lawsuit against the Straits Times, Singapore's leading newspaper, over an article that said he had installed gold-plated taps in his office bathroom.
Mr Durai said the article suggested he was misusing the charity's funds.
But potentially damaging information concerning NKF was revealed when the defamation trial began this week.
In addition to his high salary and first-class flights, Mr Durai and other staff had access to eight company cars and drivers.
Davinder Singh, the lawyer acting for the Straits Times, alleged that the NKF was misleading the public since it claimed it was treating more patients than it had, while its reserves of S$220m were adequate to help kidney patients for decades, instead of three years as NKF claimed.
Mr Durai was also alleged to have a “commercial relationship” with an NKF board member who had interests in a call centre that NKF was using.
After two days of tough questioning, Mr Durai decided to drop his defamation suit. Mr Durai is under public pressure to resign, with an online petition urging his dismissal having gathered 7,500 signatures in the past day.
NKF also reported that 2,700 people had cancelled donation pledges.
Public attention has also focused on Mrs Goh, the senior minister's wife, after she defended Mr Durai's salary.
“For a person who runs a million-dollar charitable organisation, S$600,000 is peanuts as [NKF] has a few hundred millions in reserves,” she said.
The controversy has led to calls that disclosure guidelines for charities should be tightened, including revealing the salaries of top executives.

I always been surprise to see how powerfull NKF was in Singapore.
I know that having kidney pb is no joke, but what made it such that it overshadow so much all the other charities ?
I do not know any other country where Kidney pb have such limelight.
Usually it focus more around Cancer or Red cross.
To me the only logical explanation was the marketing power that NKF had developped and not the rational behind the real need of the charity.

The NKF is an INTERNATIONAL organization much like LIVE AID and UNICEF that helps sufferers with their financial difficulties in affording cheap, highest quality medical services. They meet to exchange ideas, share practices, attend conferences, synergize more cost effective solutions.
This is why Durai goes abroad.
For a man that has fronted an organization for more than a decade, he deserves certain perks. Especially when it was the management of the NKF that hired him off a Private Organization in the 1st place.
You hire a leading man from an MNC, he will drive it like an MNC. You pay peanuts; you get monkeys.
The price tag of his job should be decreased. Yes, like all humans after a while we get complacent and used to certain luxuries. But we are human, being an NKF CEO doesnt make you perfect. How would you feel if after 2 decades of hard work you devoted to your work that you get criticised and pressured to leave for your pay after revolutionizing it.
Leading a charitable organization does not equal to you having to live the life of Mother Teresa.
I suggest that before you go further into criticising a complete stranger that has helped raise hundreds of millions that has saved thousand of your fellow Singaporean's lives, take a good look at yourself and assess what is it exactly that you have done to contribute to fight poverty, save the lives of children, the handicapped, the elderly, channel medicine to the poor, and bring a nation together to belive in helping a fellow man.
If you have done all this, you then have the right to throw the first stone.
