A not very related friend's dad went to a centre for treatment. He could not fork out the fees and ask the nurse what can he do. The nurse simply replied him, "you still got a 4 room flat, sell it lor"
Honestly, paying someone 25k per month to do a good job is reasonable. But did Durai did a great job? He may be good at canvassing fund but that is only half of the job. Only 7-8 mil were disburse in 2003 and the rest end up in reserve. And all these while there are kidney patients who did not qualify to be NKF's patients due to inability to co-finance etc etc. Despite all its financial resources, it failed to reach out to many patients who needs help. he only did half of the job. Durai is like a pilot who knows how to take off the plane but donno how to land, and the plane crash. He is an absolute failure.
Worst still, he has a serious integrity problem. And it doesn't matter how talented he is anymore when one is as dishonest. He doesn't deserve sympathy. I'm surprise there are still some people defending him.
Why not put Mrs Goh under oath in court and have her qustioned like DS question DDT?

This NKF case shed light on the existence of extravagance in charitable organisations in greater details. Well. I would say that there might be other organizations which are doing the same thing and paying their CEO's the same or even greater amount of money. I wonder if the government has guidelines to how a charitable organization is run. Transparency should be present and we should call for it.

When NKF started lucky draw donation, i was totally shock. My parents did not attend any school, means not educated. Yet they taught me 1 thing to donate means to give & not asking for returns. So when a donation become a chances to win a house or car & yet the gov. agreed & openly endoss it, it shacter my trust in this gov. Donation for charites become a way of getting rich for people of this young nation(i call it glambing).

I am not a Durai Supporter. But I think that what you have written is childish, irresponsible, selfish and full of vulgarities. Your comments are so filled with anger and hatred. That is not fair. For the effort that Durai has put in for NKF, I think that his monthly salary is justificable. Except the 12 months bonus, at a time like this should not happen. As an organisation that depends on public's money, the expendition on expensive tap to first class travel is indeed overboard.
However there are many things that Durai has done that made NKF today, helping some 2000 patients etc. Maybe he is also donating to NKF? Lets give him some credit.

For the effort that Durai has put in for NKF, I think that his monthly salary is justificable. Except the 12 months bonus, at a time like this should not happen. As an organisation that depends on public's money, the expendition on expensive tap to first class travel is indeed overboard.

One cannot fathom the logic of such huge remuneration as reward for fund-raising! $600K/yr, indeed is a lot of money - even by ministerial standards! Pardon my ignorance, but I have always had the understanding that "fund-raising" is a voluntary undertaking. Just like we did, "selling flags" on busy street corners, many, many years ago.
While on the topic of selling flags, I have had a profound and intellectual conversation with a group of teenage volunteers selling flags at a crowded subway station on a hot Saturday, recently. These were caring students, who were proud and apparently enjoyed "donating" their time for a worthy cause. But, as a parting note, they all
agreed that it would be "more fun lah", had the organizing charity provided them each with a simple bottle of mineral water and perhaps, a small sandwich. After all, they had to "solicit" all day to fulfill they assignment, and at the same time, were subjected to the elements from mother-nature.
Echoing the students' sentiments, I would like to urge charity fund-raisers to spare a thought by working with the MRT or bus companies to provide free transportation for volunteer-workers (especially students) on flag days. This little gesture does not cost the transport authorities anything, but the penny saved would indeed go a long, long way for these young volunteers.
In view of the millions of dollars raised each year, it would be interesting to hear from those charitable bodies that have benefitted all these years from the services of these dedicated and hard-working volunteers!
These, my fellow Singaporeans, are the true "unsung heroes" in our not-so-perfect society!

Have always thought of NKF as a volunteer organization. If it has a professional structure so as to attract talent, then isnt NKF not a VWO. TTD can go and get his salary as a lawyer. It is still contingent if he would be paid 600k.

This is a sob story with a heartwarming ending. About a kidney patient whose treatment was stopped when he couldn't pay. And a contrite National Kidney Foundation, which put the patient back on treatment - after finding out that a staff had made a mistake. Now, the NKF is changing the procedure which decides if a patient's treatment should be "terminated". IRENE KEW reports

And could not afford to pay the National Kidney Foundation (NKF).
But he needed dialysis sessions three times a week.
Mr Yap Lai Seng, 64, had not been paying the heavily-subsidised monthly fee of $150 since August last year.
Last Monday, his dialysis treatment was stopped, when he ran up a bill of $1,438.65.
When we visited him last Friday, after a reader had called our HotlinePlus about him, Mr Yap had missed two sessions.
His feet were swollen.
His stomach was so bloated, his wrinkled skin was stretched smooth.
Mr Yap had to be admitted to the Singapore General Hospital, and The New Paper accompanied him there.
What had gone wrong?
The NFK said one of its staff had made a bad error and apologised for the foul-up.
But couldn't his family have paid the bill to avoid a break in the treatment?
Theu say they have none left.
The retired taxi-driver, was diagnosed with kidney failure in 1995, forcing him to quit.
For a year, Mr Yap was on private dialysis, which cost $1,400 a month.
His wife, Madam Ang Char Boh, 52, worked as a coffeeshop helper, taking home $1,000 a month.
Her two sons from a previous marriage chipped in with whatever they earned as street hawkers.
In May 1996, Mr Yap was placed on NKF's dialysis programme.
By then, his savings had already run dry and he couldn't afford the monthly dialysis fee of $200.
Said Madam Ang: "My sons also have families to feed so I don't want to keep asking them for money."
What's more, Madam Ang had to look after her elder son's own son, who's now in Primary 4.
"I have to pay for his textbooks, school uniforms and take care of his meals."
So the couple appealed for a lower fee and Mr Yap was charged only $170 from April to October 1997.
Another appeal, and his fee was reduced to $150 a month in November 1997.
That, and loans from relatives and friends, helped them to cope.
Till early last year, when Madam Ang lost her job.
She had kept asking her boss for advances, she explained. "He didn't like it."
It was the start of a tough period, for Madam Ang couldn't find another job.
She would wait at coffeeshops for odd jobs. Like washing dishes and buying vegetables, which paid only $4 an hour.
Looking after her grandchild made finding a job that much more difficult.
Did they tell the NKF this?
Yes, said Madam Ang. And the NKF offered to help her find a job.
Why did she refuse?
"I have to take my grandson to school and bring him back.
"So I can't work in areas too far from home. I also want to be near home so I can rush back if anything happens to my husband."
The couple live with her younger son in a four-room HDB flat in Yishun.
Said Madam Ang: "Times are bad. Sometimes, he tells me, business is no good. I don't have the heart to ask him for money."
FAINTED
The younger son pays the monthly flat instalments of $700 and also the utilities bill.
Said Madam Ang: "It's not that we're doing nothing. We worked whenever we could and we tried to find jobs."
At times, Mr Yap even cleaned tables at coffeeshops, just to earn a free meal for himself.
"No one wanted to employ my husband because he once fainted while cleaning the tables at the coffeeshop."
In September last year, the NKF met Mr Yap.
"I explained the situation at home to them and told them why I couldn't pay up."
From April to July this year, NKF staff also called Madam Ang at home.
Claimed Madam Ang: "Every time they called, I explained the situation to them and asked if I could pay the amount we owe them in instalments."
She is trying to find a regular job, so she can pay $100 more each month.
"I'm not refusing to pay. I just asked for more time."
The couple, who have no children of their own, are illiterate.
So when the letter of termination came in July, they were at a loss.
They didn't ask anyone to read it for them, till a nurse at the dialysis centre explained what it contained, said Mr Yap.
"She told me if I don't pay up by Aug 7, I cannot have dialysis with NKF any more. She told me to go down to the office if I needed help."
Mr Yap claimed he did not know he could appeal to the NKF Patients' Appeal Committee.
There's no point for him to visit the office either, he decided.
"I thought they were going to ask me for the money. I saw no point in going because I really had no money."
On Aug 7, Mr Yap underwent his final dialysis with NKF.
Said Madam Ang, tears welling up in her eyes: "We were so sad and lost the past few months. My husband kept telling me he wanted to die because he didn't want to be a burden any more."
Now, after NKF's assurance, he certainly isn't.
After SGH told NKF about his condition, Mr Yap is back on his dialysis routine.
For his wife, Madam Ang, the relief is huge: "I'm just glad he now has a place to go for dialysis. I just want to see him live."
NKF: We're sorry, it was our mistake
PROCEDURES not followed.
A bad error. And the National Kidney Foundation is sorry for making a mistake.
And for sending Mr Yap a letter informing him that his dialysis sessions were being terminated.
"In this particular incident, the staff involved did not follow the procedure and the staff have been severely reprimanded," Mr Alwyn Lim, vice-chairman of the NKF, told The New Paper.
He added: "It was a human error on the part of the staff and I have asked for a review of the department because it's essential that serious mistakes like this not be repeated."
More importantly, the NKF has amended its termination procedures.
Now, Mr Lim will serve as the final check.
He explained: "Whatever the staff recommends comes to me for final assessment before it goes to the termination stage. It automatically triggers off the appeals panel."
Till now, an NKF patient who has been terminated could appeal to the NKF Patients' Appeal Committee, which is made up of independent members of the public.
Now, before a patient is terminated, his case will automatically go to the Appeals Committee.
According to Mr Lim, upon examining Mr Yap's case, he found that "the staff did not follow the procedure" and the termination was "immediately countermanded".
According to NKF, its staff investigated Mr Yap's case from the time SGH brought it to the NKF's attention last Friday.
The CEO of NKF, Mr T T Durai, was alerted about the situation, and he put Mr Yap back on the programme immediately. Said Mr Lim:
"It was an immediate rectification, as staff members had failed to follow the system."
He said that patients being terminated is not common: There were six cases last year.
Said Mr Lim: "I can't recall any case where it was for money. They were recalcitrant, non-compliant cases."
That is, patients who did not keep to diets and skipped dialysis sessions.
Or patients who refused to work when they were fit to, and expected free dialysis.
For such cases, NKF will first counsel the patient.
"If we have exhausted all means of convincing them," said Mr Lim, "the person is suicidal essentially. So don't waste public money.
"I cannot provide a justification to my donors who will ask: 'Why are you dialysing this person?' "
He added: "We are very fair because we set up rehabilitation. If you can't get a job, we'll find you a job.
"But if you don't want to work, other people work their butts off here, and you want free dialysis? No way. We cannot send the wrong signal to the public and to our other patients.
"Can you imagine what would happen if all 2,000 refuse to pay? End of programme."
NKF has allowed patients to run up bigger bills than Mr Yap's $1,438.65.
Also, NKF offers a very flexible repayment scheme, which was also extended to Mr Yap.
Said Mr Lim: "We have people who owe much more, but there were extenuating circumstances and we try our best."
Like patients who go bankrupt.
"It's not their fault their business fails. It is when they are recalcitrant - when they can afford it but don't pay - that we take action.
"The reality is that other patients are watching. If they say, 'You allowed this one to get away without paying; I'm not going to pay either', then the whole thing will collapse.
"Donors are very watchful. If their donations are not properly spent, they will withhold, withdraw and they will not support us and the whole programme will be gone."
But Mr Lim and the NKF declined to comment on Mr and Mrs Yap's claims that they did inform NKF of their financial troubles, saying that it would serve no purpose.
He said: "We are not here to stick pins into anybody or find fault. Ultimately, the NKF staff have made a mistake and we will have to apologise for it.
"The crux of the matter is the error has been rectified and the person is back on the programme. We go on from there."
Mr Lim maintained that according to NKF's records, Mrs Yap had been called "many times". "We hate this because each time you have to call, a lot of personnel hours are wasted and it is ultimately public donation wasted for chasing dialysis fees."
He declined to comment on Mrs Yap's claims that she told NKF her problems. "If one were to go into the details of why it happened... you will never find the truth. But that's not important. The letter should never have gone out. The important thing is it has been rectified.
"The procedure is sound. It's actually the administration of the procedure. If you have great procedures, and you put the wrong staff on, then you've got great trouble. We all work hard to provide dialysis. We're here to save lives.
"The staff are not made up of gods and angels. We're humans and we make mistakes. But hopefully with each mistake, we improve and we get better."

THE former international real estate consultant who accused the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) and its chief executive officer, Mr T.T. Durai, of squandering public donations has apologised for the defamatory remarks.
In April last year, Mr Archie Ong Liang Gay, 49, had said in a casual conversation to Mr Alwyn Lim, an NKF volunteer, that the organisation squandered money and that Mr Durai "jets here -and there in first class", implying that he did so on NKF business.
Mr Durai filed a writ of notice last July, while five other NKF executive committee members filed theirs separately last August.
All the suits were settled out of court by last December. Mr Ong's apology notice was published in yesterday's Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao.
In it, he said the implications of his statements were "totally baseless and untrue".
"I apologise and regret that the statement was ever made and withdraw it unreservedly," added Mr Ong, who was a volunteer with the NKF from 1985 to 1994.
He also paid damages and legal costs of the suits, which have since been donated to the NKF.
On why the NKF pursued the case, Mr Durai told The Straits Times: "Reputation is something which is sacrosanct to any institution of public character and it's so with the NKF. And we have to preserve it so that it's not hurt by gross untruths.
"The statements were grossly untrue and they are detrimental to the cause which my colleagues and donors of NKF are committed to."
Contrary to what the statements implied, he said the NKF's public funds were protected from misuse.
"There are a lot of controls in the organisation. We have two accounting firms - Price Waterhouse and Coopers & Lybrand - and an audit committee chaired by an independent accountant."
On the implication that he flies first class on NKF funds, Mr Durai said: 'We on the exco have never and will never use NKF funds for private travel.
"I have business concerns apart from the NKF which I have to attend to. And I may also get an upgrade to first class. So what people see cannot be assumed to be the truth."
When contacted, Mr Ong said he would not comment on the case.
"I just want to put the whole episode behind me and carry on helping people," he said, noting that he continued to support "a couple" of charitable organisations as A Lions Club member.

NKF is a charitable Organisation, that means its a “NON-PROFIT” body and hence, the word "TURN-OVER" is not applicable in this instance.
A Charitable Organisation means the organization rely on public funding to operate its charitable causes to the public, and hence, NO appointed employee or individual of a charitable organisation should benefit excessive salary as in TT's case. These are public donations and it must be use for the real and meaningful cause to aid the public in need.
I share this with you because I felt you talk "nuts" after reading your tread. Judging from your statements, you must be a newbie in our working society and knows nothing about the real and practical world out there.
To reiterate my simple point so as to help you understand better…I personally served as a CEO of a foreign Investment Company and I drew a monthly wage of S$30,000, besides other perks I get annually. It means annually, my gross income surpasses the 6 “0's”. Our organization can justify that cos we are a private Investment Company with big ‘TURNOVERS” and a profitable. So, its justifiable by the board of directors to offer me these packages. I am not the person u addressed your latest post to but i would disagree about corporate and charity drawing equivalent amounts of salary. Firstly, the job scope might be different and the nature of the so called business is different too. Yes, TT's pay is significantly less than CEOs in the corporate world. But bear in mind that the nature of the "business" is also different.
It would be alright to say that a nurse at NKF should draw roughly the same pay as a nurse in SGH (for example) probably due to job scope similarities. But the management structure is different. Sales, profit, marketing, monopolizing the market are the goals of the corporations but not for NKF.
Moreover, i believe there is a ceiling to how far the NKF can reach as it is a charitable organization. I could be wrong, but i feel that once they manage to set a certain standard, they cant really progress much further except to gain more and more funds as the sources of funds are not really that many. The media has done an excellent job and i guess a large portion of funds could be coming from the charity shows.
With the vast amount of funds they have now (which the fact is a source of outrage to some), they could probably adjust the amounts of dialysis subsidy and lets say keep 20 years of reserves. Anything beyond that, they could help out those genuinely in desperate need or dish out minor perks to volunteers as a token of appreciation.
For now, the pristine image has been battered and it probably wouldnt recover to its original state.

I don’t quite understand – if listed company reports false information on their quarterly results, the CAD will investigate and charge the CEO. But for NKF, KPMG is engaged to audit the accounts. Should the CAD or CPIB or whatever they call it, be involved? Although NKF is not a listed company, the way they operated (in a business form) involve the public’s contribution. Any announcement or putting up information to the press has to be accurate and not misleading. Isn’t it clear that those information (3 years reserve, no 1st class flight, 3000 patients…..) provided by NKF is misleading the public into donating more money.
For whatever reasons NKF has, whether to keep more reserve for rainy days or for meeting the CEO’s KPI, it is clear that the public was misled into contributing more, even throughout the past three difficult years that most of us was finding it hard to survive with the lost of jobs, pay cut, CPF cut, etc., it’s hard to stomach when we know the CEO (still not known for the rest of the staffs and board) of a charity organization was getting a 10-12 months bonus and flying first class.
If the outcome of the audit is clean, which most likely to be since audit has been done the past few years without any discrepancy (else someone will be questioned for negligence), the public confidence can never be restored. I for one will not be convinced if the ex-CEO and the board get away without any responsibility.
Mr Khaw says "the job requires a good balance of the heart and head." But I would think the “heart” is the more important factor though he cannot do without a “head”. The way I look at the whole saga, the ex-CEO lacks the “heart” though he has a business “head”. One with good “heart” will help NKF to save cost on staffs’ perks (such as travel on biz class or lower, reduce unnecessary travel, pay on his own account on personal car, etc) so that more patients can be save or reduce their co-payment on dialysis.

a) Any body knows how many are on the waiting list of NKF if there is any? How many had died without treatment cos did not qualify?
